New pipe handling contract for NorSea Group (Australia) Pty Ltd
(Stavanger 4 September 2013) NorSea Group has recently signed a contract with Saipem in connection with the laying of a 882 km long pipeline from the Ichthys field in the Timor Sea, to a new LNG plant in Darwin.
It is the Japanese oil company Inpex Browse Ltd that is the operating company for the Ichthys field, which will be developed northwest of Australia. Inpex Browse has previously awarded Saipem the EPCI contract for the laying of the Ichthys field gas pipeline. Saipem has now chosen NorSea Group as its subcontractor and partner. NorSea Group’s Project Department will be responsible for the planning and implementation of transshipment, storage and unloading of up to 72 000 pipes in Tenau / Kupang on the island of West Timor in Indonesia. The pipes have a diameter of about 1.2 metres, are 12.5 metres long and have an average weight of 16.9 tons.
Cooperation with Wilhelmsen Ships Service
"NorSea Group has previously won several major pipe laying contracts nationally and internationally, but this is still a milestone and will strengthen the company's competitive position in the international market for similar contracts," says Manager of the Project Department, Stig Holgersen. According to Holgersen, NorSea Group’s handling methods, without the involvement of personnel in heavy lifting operations, and close cooperation with Wilhelmsen Ships Service Indonesia, are some of the success factors that have resulted in the company now being awarded this strategically important contract.
NorSea Group is already well on their way with the planning process. The pipe laying is scheduled to start in 2nd quarter of 2014 and will go on for about 10 to 12 months, depending on the project's progress.
